Zero-point energy

In a quantum mechanical system such as the particle in a box, the lowest possible energy is called the zero-point energy.

In the fringes of science, the term is also used in speculations that the force behind the Casimir effect could be used to create usable power, an assertion met with extreme skepticism because a truly huge device would be needed to gather significant energy. See Vacuum energy for further discussion.
