An upstart United States ice hockey team, made up primarily of collegiate players, won the gold medal, defeating Finland in the final. Their extraordinary upset victory over the heavily favored Soviet team in the semifinal became known as the "Miracle On Ice" in the US press. This event was made into a movie called Miracle.
