Växjö
Växjö is a Municipality in Kronoberg County, in southern Sweden. The municipality covers an area of 1674.3 km². Of the total population of 75 036, 37 287 are male, and 37 749 are female (dec 31, 2002). The population density of the community is 44 inhabitants per km².
Having been an important market and commercial centre since around year 1000, Växjö obtained was declared a city in 1492. Växjö has also been an important religious centre and the cathedral was first built during the 12th century. Following the cathedral were schools of which the Old Lyceum is one of Sweden's oldest educational insitutions having seen amongst others Linneus (Carl von Linné) as one of it's students.
Nowadays, Växjö is the administrative, cultural and industrial centre of Kronoberg and central Småland, being home to a university and industries such as Alstom and Aerotech Telub.
Famous people from Växjö include Christina Nilsson, Pär Lagerkvist, Karl-Birger Blomdahl and Mats Wilander.
