USS City of Corpus Christi

USS City of Corpus Christi (SSN 705) is a Los Angeles class nuclear-powered attack submarine of the United States Navy. The contract to build the boat was awarded to the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics Corporation on October 31, 1973. She was laid down September 4, 1979, in Groton, Connecticut, she was launched April 25, 1981 sponsored by Mrs. John Tower, delivered to the Navy on November 24, 1982, and commissioned January 8, 1983 with Commander W.G. Ellis in command. She is homeported in Guam.

Though most LA-class boats are named for cities, the "city of" prefix to her name is unique within the class, and was added to placate protesters who felt it improper to name a warship "the body of Christ." The city of Corpus Christi is in Texas.
