Trentino-Alto Adige

Italy Regions Trentino 220px.png

Trentino-South Tyrol (in Italian: Trentino-Alto Adige, in German: Trentino-Südtirol) is an autonomous region in north Italy. It consists of the part of the Tyrol south of the Brenner Pass, occupied by Italy after World War One, and subsequently annexed. Its former name until 1947 was Venezia Tridentina, suggesting former posession of this region by the Republic of Venice, which is historically incorrect.

It is bordered by Austria to the north and by the regions of Lombardy to the west and Veneto to the south. It covers 13,613 km² and has a population of about 880,000.

The regional capital is Trento. The region is divided in two provinces: Bozen-Südtirol (Bolzano-Alto Adige) and Trento.
