Portions of the Tajik boundary with the People's Republic of China are not defined and there is a territorial dispute with Kyrgyzstan on northern boundary in Isfara Valley area
Contributing to foreign tension, there is limited illicit cultivation of cannabis, mostly for domestic consumption, and opium poppy cultivation that is negligible as of 1998 because of a government eradication program. The country remains a major transshipment point for illicit drugs from Southwest Asia to Russia and Western Europe.
