The southern United States has a distinct cuisine that draws heavily on African American influences. Soul food, Creole, and Cajun are types of southern cuisine.

Some foods that are common in the U.S. South are sweet tea and grits.

Other distinctive or typical dishes include: fried chicken, biscuits, okra (fried, boiled, pickled, or in gumbo), a variety of other pickles including peaches, green tomatoes, watermelon rind, and so on, fried pies, pit barbecue, catfish, and corn bread.
