Serious Organised Crime Agency

The creation of the Serious Organised Crime Agency in the United Kingdom was announced on February 9, 2004, and is expected to be in operation by 2006.

The agency is to be formed from the merger of the National Crime Squad, National Criminal Intelligence Service, and sections of Customs and Excise, and the Inland Revenue. The agency will be funded by central government, and is expected to have around 5000 investigators.

It's mission will be to counteract organised crime, including the illegal drug trade and people smuggling.

Parallels have been draw between the organisation and the US Federal Bureau of Investigation, although it will not handle terrorism or murder.
