Public Key Infrastructure
A public key infrastructure (PKI) provides means for linking people to their public keys, by using:
- Certificates: Digitally signed documents that say: "This is John Doe Public Key".
- Certificate Revocation Lists: Lists of revoked certificates.
- Directories: You would come here to find John Doe Certificate.
For a PKI to be effective:
- The private key of the Certificate Authority must remain secret.
- When people certifies their identity must be throughtly checked.
- Some way of distributing public certificates must be available.
