Public Key Infrastructure

A public key infrastructure (PKI) provides means for linking people to their public keys, by using:

  • Certificates: Digitally signed documents that say: "This is John Doe Public Key".
  • Certificate Revocation Lists: Lists of revoked certificates.
  • Directories: You would come here to find John Doe Certificate.

For a PKI to be effective:

  • The private key of the Certificate Authority must remain secret.
  • When people certifies their identity must be throughtly checked.
  • Some way of distributing public certificates must be available.
