Pterygota is a subclass of insects that includes the winged insects. It also includes insect orders that are secondarily wingless (that is, insect groups whose ancestors once had wings but that have lost them as a result of subsequent evolution).
The living insect Orders within the pterygotan group include almost all insects:
- Ephemeroptera -- mayflies.
- Odonata -- dragonflies and damselflies.
- Grylloblattaria -- rock crawlers.
- Phasmida -- walking sticks.
- Orthoptera -- grasshoppers and crickets.
- Mantodea -- mantids.
- Blattaria -- cockroaches.
- Isoptera -- termites.
- Dermaptera -- earwigs.
- Embiidina -- webspinners.
- Plecoptera -- stoneflies.
- Zoraptera -- zorapterans.
- Psocoptera -- psocids.
- Phthiraptera -- lice.
- Hemiptera -- bugs.
- Homoptera -- cicadas, hoppers, aphids, scale insects.
- Thysanoptera -- thrips.
- Neuroptera -- lace wings, ant lions, dobsonflies.
- Coleoptera -- beetles.
- Strepsiptera -- twisted wing parasites.
- Mecoptera -- scorpionflies.
- Siphonaptera -- fleas.
- Diptera -- flies and mosquitoes.
- Tricoptera -- caddisflies.
- Lepidoptera -- butterflies, moths, skippers.
- Hymenoptera -- bees, wasps, ants.
The hexapod orders missing from this list include the Microcoryphia (jumping bristletails) and the Thysanura (silverfish and firebrats), two primitively wingless insect orders. Also not on this list are the three orders that are no longer considered to be insects: Protura, Collembola, and Diplura.
