Portal is a city located on the Canadian border in Burke County, North Dakota. In 2000, the city had a population of 131.

Portal is a major port of entry for road and rail traffic, one of three 24-hour ports in North Dakota (the others being Dunseith and Pembina)

Geography

Portal is located at 48°59'44" North, 102°33'2" West (48.995629, -102.550430)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.5 km² (0.6 mi²). 1.5 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 131 people, 63 households, and 43 families residing in the city. The population density is 90.3/km² (232.8/mi²). There are 98 housing units at an average density of 67.6/km² (174.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 99.24% White, 0.00% African American, 0.76% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.00% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 63 households out of which 19.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.5% are married couples living together, 3.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.7% are non-families. 31.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.08 and the average family size is 2.58.

In the city the population is spread out with 17.6% under the age of 18, 1.5% from 18 to 24, 24.4% from 25 to 44, 38.9% from 45 to 64, and 17.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 48 years. For every 100 females there are 101.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $36,406, and the median income for a family is $48,929. Males have a median income of $37,000 versus $20,500 for females. The per capita income for the city is $18,949. 10.0% of the population and 7.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 0.0% are under the age of 18 and 10.3% are 65 or older.
