Evaristus, fourth Pope (c. 98-105). Also known under the name of Aristus. Little is known about Evaristus. According to Liber Pontificalis he came from a family of Hellenic origin, but had a father that was a BethlehemJew. He was elected during the reign of the Roman emperorDomitian, the time of the second general persecution. Liber Pontificalis also states that he divided Rome into seven diaconias. He is traditionally considered a martyr, but there is no historic proof of this.
