Nurmijärvi

Nurmijärvi is a village and a rural municipality north of Finland's capital Helsinki.

The proximity to Helsinki, some 25-50 kilometers, has led to a considerable growth of the major villages, which nowadays rather are to be considered suburbs of Helsinki.

Nurmijärvi is best known as the birthplace of Finland's national author, Aleksis Kivi (1834-1872). His play "Nummisuutarit" (The Cobblers of the Heath) - with colorful scenes of rural life in 19th century Nurmijärvi parish - are performed in summers at a outdoor theatre in Palojoki, the village were Alex Kivi was born.
