In the original UC timeline of Gundam, a Newtype represents the next stage of human evolution, bought about by mankind's migration into space. Newtype ability manifests itself primarily as hightened empathy and awareness, which means that Newtypes make ideal Mobile Suit pilots. Newtypes also appear in the alternate AW universe of Gundam X, but their abilities cannot be considered representative of Newtypes in the UC universe.
Newtype is also the name of a monthly Japanese anime magazine, named for the Newtypes of the UC Gundam universe. The magazine was first published in Japan in March1985.
