Narkompros

Narkompros an abbreviation for the High Comissariat for Public Instruction, was a kind of Ministry of Education of USSR. It was lead by Anatoly Lunatcharksy, a very intelligent man, well informed in modern art and with a good taste which had no similar in the Revolution leader, Vladimir Lenin.

Lunatcharsky protected most of the avant-garde artists such as Vladimir Mayakovsky, Kazimir Malevich, Tatlin and Meyerhold. Despite of his efforts, the official policy after Stalin put him in disgrace. The ISO-Narkompros, or the section dedicated to painting was shortly under the command of Vassily Kandinsky who, however, was not well succeeded for his spiritualist ideas over art were not accepted by materialistic intelectuals. Back to Germany he would work at Bauhaus. Lunatcharsky directed some of the great experiments in public arts after Revolution such as the Agit-Trains and Agit-boats, that circulated over all Russia spreading Revolution and revolutinary arts.

He also gave support to the constructivists theatrical experiments and the initiatives such as the ROSTA windows, revolutinary posters designed and written by Mayakovsky and Alexander Rodtchenko.
