List of metro systems
Here is an alphabetical listing of cities which have a metro (also called underground or subway) system.
This page uses the definition found on the metro article, under which a metro system:
- is urban,
- has a short headway (interval between trains),
- is electric,
- operates entirely on its own right-of-way.
This page will include all systems that obey these characteristics, without regard to specific profile or technology (i.e. underground, at grade, above ground, monorail, linear-induction...)
On the other hand, systems that are called "metro" but are really light rail (mainly those not segregated from other traffic, such as tramways and streetcars) are not included here but in List of light-rail transit systems.

- the Staten Island Railway, another subsidiary of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which serves the fifth borough of New York City, Staten Island
- AirTrain JFK, a rail service linking the New York City Subway and New York's JFK Airport. Operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the AirTrain is considered by some to be more a light-rail than a heavy-rail system
- in addition, New York City is served by the PATH underground trains, which connect the city to nearby suburbs in New Jersey and are operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey
- Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (Southeastern Pennsylvania Transit Authority)
- Portland, Oregon (3 mi segment of MAX Blue line)
- San Francisco, California BART (1972). The BART includes both the subway and some bus services in the San Francisco Bay Area, both of which are fully accessible.
