Lines of position

Line of Position

A line of position (LOP) is a navigational term referring to a line along which a vessel lies. If the navigator takes a compass bearing from a lighthouse, for example, she will draw a line on her chart from the lighthouse. The ship will be somewhere along that line when the bearing was "shot". The crossing of two or more LOPs gives her a fix.
