Images of Athens

Athens is the capital city of Greece. Its long history has enabled it to become the host of many ancient, mediaeval, and modern sites of interest.

In this photographic article you will be able to see not only the touristic attractions, but also how Athens actually looks and how its citizens spend their time.

Thesseion

Modern Athens and the Ancient Heritage: The ancient Greek Temple of Hephaestos, also called Thesseion (because in mediaeval times it was believed that Theseus' bones were placed in it after his death in Skyros), near Acropolis. Not very far away, behind the ancient temple there is an Eastern Orthodox church. On the background you can see an overview of the modern city and the mountains which surround it.

National Technical University of Athens

National Technical University of Athens or Polytechnio: Patission & Stournari street. This is one of the buildings of NTUA. In 1973-1974 the school hosted a riot-revolution against the military junta. Every year on November 17 the Greeks celebrate the event here.

The Greek flag

The Greek flag: The air flows from the south, while it makes this Greek flag to wave. The flag is located at Syntagma, the Greek Parliament.

Hierarch Gregory

The Hierarch Gregory (or Grigorios, Gregorios): Statue at Panepistimio, Athens.

The Academy

The Academy of Athens: On the left you can see a statue of Athena, accompanied by a statue of Apollo on the right and the Greek flag on the centre.

The Museum

The Archaeological Museum of Athens: The Greeks call it simply "the Museum".

The Eye-clinic

The Eye clinic of Athens: It was founded in 1843 and the building was a church at first. Of course it's not the only eye clinic in Athens!

Syntagma

The Syntagma: This building was the house of the king when Greece was a monarchy. Now it serves as the Parliament. Syntagma means constitution.

Trolley & Taxi

Trolley & Taxi: A trolley and a taxi near Syntagma. Trolleys in Athens use electricity and they don't generate pollution. The normal trolley ticket, as of 2004, is 0.45 Euro. Trolleys have air conditioning and advertisements under their windows. Taxis in Athens are distinguished by their yellow colour, but in other cities the colour may vary. The minimum Taxi fare, as of 2004, is 1.5 Euro.
