Huysmans

Joris-Karl Huysmans (February 5, 1848 - May 12, 1907) was a French novelist.

He was born in Paris, France. As an adult he worked as a civil servant, became a war hero (Legion of Honor), and a founding member of the Académie Goncourt.

An apostle of perversity and decadence, author of A rebours (Against the Grain) (1884) and La-Bas (Down There) (1891). His 1884 cult novel titled: "A rebours (Against Nature)" was a story that featured a decadent aristocrat who collected the drawings of a then relatively obscure artist named Odilon Redon. La-Bas concerns itself with the then-novel subject of Satanism.

In later years he became a devout Catholic.

Joris-Karl Huysmans was interred in the Cimetière du Montparnasse, Paris, France.
