Guri is a shona word meaning stock. It is used more specifically for the stock of the maize/corn cob (guri regwere, guri rebarwe, guri rechibahwe). Guri may also be used for various other crops whose seeds are clustered on a stock. The ashes of the mealie cob are a rich substitute of bicarbonate of soda and are used in the preparation of traditional Shona foods. Guri is a family name of people living in the eastern part of Zimbabwe, in Southern Africa. The Guris are found mainly in Manicaland Province. There is a large constellation of the Guris in Tanda, Chiendambuya, Nyanga, Chikore, Inyati, Devedzo, Rusape and other sorrounding area. Guri family are part of a larger Makombe family that traces its origins to Chief Makombe of Barwe in Mozambique. The Makombe of the Humba Nyanguru totem are a Barwe tribe who are living in the Manicaland Province of Zimbabwe and the adjacent Manica province of Mozambique.
