Golden hammer
A Golden hammer is a tool, technology, paradigm, snake oil, buzzword or similar that the proponent is so fond of, that this person predicts it will be the solution to many problems, including some which it is obviously not suited to solve.
The mental image the name is supposed to evoke is that of an infant who has obtained its first hammer and a few nails. It is a well-known fact that hammering nails is fun, and when the nails run out, everything start to look like nails.
Examples
- Programming paradigms: "by programming everything using the paradigm X, all problems will be solved by themselves"
- Ideologies: "by applying the particular ideology X in all instances of societal organization, all social problems will solve themselves"
- Products: "our product will solve all your problems!" (see Snake oil)
