Ecole des Beaux-Arts

École des Beaux-Arts refers to several art schools in France. The most famous one is located in Paris, in the 6th arrondissement. Until 1897 women were barred from studying there.

They are located in:

  • Paris: École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts (Ensba)
  • Dijon: École nationale des beaux-arts de Dijon
  • Bourges: École nationale des beaux-arts de Bourges
  • Nancy: École nationale des beaux-arts de Nancy
  • Lyon: École nationale des beaux-arts de Lyon

There is also an École des Beaux-Arts in Montreal in Canada.

In architecture, the style known as the Beaux Arts refers to the way in which architectural design was taught in the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and also to the corresponding architecural style that was practised. The emphasis was towards producing quick sketch schemes involving beautiful drawings and detailing without much emphasis on real context such as site considerations. History was heavily drawn upon.
