East Asian Buddhism is a collective term for the schools of Buddhism that developed in the East Asian region, usually understood to be Mahayana by historical transmission. This includes Chinese Buddhism, Korean Buddhism, and Japanese Buddhism. Although, strictly speaking, Vietnam is located in Southeast Asia, the character of Vietnamese Buddhism is in many ways closer to that of its northern East Asian relatives, rather than the other Southeast Asian countries.
