DikuMUD

DikuMUD is a MUD written in 1990 and 1991 by Sebastian Hammer, Tom Madsen, Katja Nyboe, Michael Seifert, and Hans Henrik Staerfeldt at DIKU (Datalogisk Institut Københavns Universitet), the department of computer science at the University of Copenhagen in Copenhagen, Denmark. Diku was based on AberMUD, an important variant of the original MUD written by Richard Bartle.

Commonly referred to as simply "Diku", it was the first multi-user game to reach a height of popularity in the open source community for its relatively addictive gameplay and similarity to Dungeons & Dragons.

Originally intended to be a commercial service, Diku's source code was leaked in 1991 and became the "source" of one of the largest MUD trees of derived code from a MUD-like source code package. It has been the basis of a vast number of MUDs, including AlexMUD, GrimneMUD, and MUME, as well as a number of offspring MUD engines such as CircleMUD and MERC. The commercial MMORPG EverQuest shared so many similarities with Diku that on March 17, 2000, Verant Interactive gave the Diku group a sworn statement saying that they did not use any DikuMUD code in making EQ.
