Degauss

Degauss, named after the German mathematician and astronomer Karl Friedrich Gauss is typically the process of removing magnetism from a device using a Cathode Ray Tube (CRT), which is traditionally most televisions and computer monitors. The magnetism of these tubes can often cause inaccuracies and misrepresentation of colour.

Most televisions automatically degauss their picture tube when switched on (as do some monitors), but some monitors are degaussed manually. An external degausser is often used by governments to protect sensitive information from being burned into the display of monitors and televisions.
