Cybill was a US remake of Absolutely Fabulous made 1995-1998 with Cybill Shepherd in the lead role. Like Absolutely Fabulous the main character had a disapproving daughter, two quite different ex-husbands, and a best friend (Maryann Thorpe)who was played by Christine Baranski; whose heavy drinking, sexy image and self-indulgent behavior provided much of the humor. Cybill's character in the show was a somewhat faded television actress and unlike Edina Monsoon was somewhat likeable and had some redeeming character traits.
In comparison to Absolutely Fabulous the content was much toned down, possibly because of self censorship and to fit better in the US sitcom tradition.
