The Condor Legion was the nickname of a the part of Germany's air force which was supporting the Nationalists (i.e., Francisco Franco) in the Spanish Civil War.
It became infamous for bombing the city of Guernica, with is regarded as the first major aerial attack on civilians. This attack inspired Pablo Picasso to his famous picture.
