Chico Mendes
Chico Mendes, born Francisco Alves Mendes Filho, was a Brazilian environmentalist, dedicating his life to the Amazon and its population.
Born in the small city of Xapuri, Acre, in December 15th, 1944, Chico Mendes became a rubber tapper as a child. As he grew up, he started fighting for his fellow workers' rights, for the protection of the rainforest and against the local latinfundia owners. For his actions, he won several awards on ecology defense, such as the United Nations' Global 500.
After years of threatening and torturing by both the local landowners and the Brazilian military dictatorship, Chico Mendes was shot to death on December 22nd, 1988.
