Chester Carlson

Chester Carlson (February 8, 1906 - September 19, 1968) was an American physicist and inventor born in Seattle, Washington. He invented electrophotography and instant copying, later to be known as Xerox.

As a high school student, Carlson published a chemical magazine to support his invalid parents. His interest in printing continued through his physics degree program at the California Institute of Technology and into his early career at the electronics firm P.R. Mallory Company, where he began working for the patent department in 1930.
