Chaos Emerald

A Chaos Emerald is a mystic item that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog video games, allowing the holder of all seven of them to transform into a "super" form. Each emerald is composed of postive and negative charged materials which make them an everlasting source of energy and allows them to float, allowing them to go faster than they normally can. Sonic and Knuckles only use the positive charged part of the emerald to transform, which is demonstrated by Sonic at the end of Sonic Adventure. Knuckles has only been able to transform in Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Tails was also able to attain a super form with the use of both the Chaos Emeralds and the Super Emeralds in Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

The Chaos Emeralds can be anywhere, usually located in a "Special Stage". Even alone, their power is unmatched by anything else in the entire universe, however, their power can be halted at any time by the Master Emerald. In Sonic the Hedgehog, there were 6 Chaos Emeralds located in 2D rotating Special Stages, and Sonic could not become super with only 6. Sonic 2 was the first game to introduce all 7, in pseudo-3D Special Stages where Sonic & Tails continuously run forward on a path that sometimes curves). In Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles, the 7 emeralds are located in pseudo-3D special stages that rotate entirely when you turn, and you must attempt to collect all the Blue Spheres located in the stage. The Chaos Emeralds appear as plot items in Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2. In Sonic Adventure, the Chaos Emeralds were collected by Dr. Eggman in order to feed Chaos, a water beast that changed form every time it received a Chaos Emerald. With all 7 it became Perfect Chaos, and used all of the negative energy in the emeralds before dropping them onto the ground. Sonic then picked all 7 up and used the positive energy to become Super Sonic and defeat Perfect Chaos. In Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic and Shadow had the ability to use the Chaos Emeralds to "Chaos Control", alter time and space and teleport or freeze time. Shadow collected the Emeralds for Dr. Eggman to power the ARK, at which point Biolizard took over the station. Biolizard became FinalHazard, and then Sonic and Shadow had to team up and use the Chaos Emeralds (it is believed Sonic used the positive energy and Shadow used the negative energy, but no proof has been given) to become Super and defeat FinalHazard.

Contrary to popular belief, the emeralds were not protected by Echidnas originally, but by Chaos, a water like being that protected both these emeralds and the Chao that lived there.

Tikal found Chaos and the chao in her ancient Echidna family. She loved them and cared for them, but her father found out about them and wanted the power of the chaos emeralds for himself. He attacked the emeralds and stole them for himself- sealing Chaos away inside the master emerald, killing Tikal in the process. We know this as Tikal's spirit is of the age when she died, which is the age at which her father attacked the emerald. The Chao lived on and bred however.

This is the point at which the Echidnas took over in protecting the emeralds. Knuckles is the Echidna that protects them in the time of the current Sonic the hedgehog timeline, and probably the only Echidna left (In the official storyline, fan comics claim there are other Echidnas).

The most powerful emerald, the Master Emerald, keeps Knuckles' home (an island paradise called Angel Island) afloat and safe from disaster. It is not known if the island was afloat in the time of Tikal.

In Fleetway's Sonic The Comic, the history of the Emeralds is expanded considerably, though some points contridict the offical storyline from the games. The Grey Emerald is said to be the most powerful of the seven, and has the ability to control the energy of the other Emeralds. However, the Master Emerald can still over-rule it's power. The original form of the seven Emeralds were what are now known as the Super Emeralds. They were taken from Angel Island by persons unknown (though it was probably Dr. Ovi Kintobor, the original form of Dr. Ivo Robotnik) and began to lose their power, reverting to the small emeralds that are familar to all the Sonic games. Dr. Kintobor planned to use the Emeralds as a storage device to contain all the negative energy in the world, but a freak accident infused him with pure chaos energy and turned him into Sonic's lifetime antagonist.

Contrary to Sonic Adventure, there is no positive energy in the Emeralds: only chaos energy. The Emeralds absorb chaos energy through contact, draining the victim and growing more instable. In contrast to this, Sonic absorbs chaos energy, which is why he is the only one (storyline-wise) who is able to harness their power and transform into Super Sonic. The only way to stop the transfer of chaos energy to and from the Emeralds is to keep them at a cold temperature. In the comic, Super Sonic was an insane, all-powerful version of Sonic created when he absorbs too much chaos energy and goes out of control.

It is also implied that it was the Emeralds which created the Special Stages in order to protect themselves from Dr. Robotnik. Another plot point is that at one time, the seven original Emeralds were split into fourteen, the emeralds from Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 respectfully. These Emeralds were then fused back into seven in the comics. However, this is never proven or implied in the games.
