Behcet's Syndrome

Behcet's disease (also known as "Silk Road Disease") is a chronic inflammatory disease of the blood vessels, first described by Turkish physician Hulusi Behcet in 1937. It most often strikes patients in their 20s and 30s. Common symptoms include mouth ulcers, genital sores, and eye inflammation. Behcet's disease is a lifelong disorder that proceeds in a series of remissions and exacerbations.

There is no cure; treatment is currently aimed at easing the symptoms, reducing inflammation, and controlling the immune system.

An estimated 15,000 to 20,000 Americans have been diagnosed with this disease.
