Battle of Arginusae

The naval Battle of Arginusae took place in 406 BC during the Peloponnesian War. It was fought among the Arginusae Islands and the Athenian commander, Conon, destroyed 70 of 120 Peloponnesian ships and killed the opposing commander, Callicratidas. The Athenian victory was costly though; when a storm arose after the battle and drowned many of the sailors on the wrecked Athenian ships, eight of the top Athenian officers were accused of neglecting their duty, then executed or exiled, a loss that would be felt at Aegospotami the next year.
