Australian First Army
The Australian First Army was formed in April 1942 by the raising of Australian I Corps to Army status. It controlled many of the Australian formations that fought in the South West Pacific Theater during the campaign in New Guinea. It later took responsibility for rear areas that American units vacated as they moved on to attack more forward Japanese positions. It was also responsible for commanding the Australian units that took part in the last amphibious assault of the Pacific war, the attack on Balikpapan and other targets in Dutch and British Borneo. It was inactivated in November 1945.
