For the sole reason of being the last decade of a millennium, it is viewed as a background for a pivotal point in future history. The next turn of the millennium has a special appeal to science fiction writers, as evidenced in the name of Mystery Science Theatre 3000.
The TV show Futurama takes place in the year 3000. The comic book series Legion of Super-Heroes takes place 1000 years in the future, so the majority of its stories to date occur in the 30th century.
The latest novel in Arthur C. Clarke's Space Odyssey series takes place in 3001.
