Willa Cather

Willa Sibert Cather (1873-1947) steeped in the rural beauty and proud tradition of the Midwest after moving there as a child. Cather painted authentic, dignified portrayals of immigrant families and residents of the Central Plains. She wrote nonfiction articles and poetry but is best known for her novels, particularly O Pioneers! (1913) and My Antonia (1918), which feature strong female heroines coping with rural hardship and societal restraints. Her respectful portraits of determined immigrants are set against a backdrop of appreciation for the prairie and its demands. Cather's organic descriptions of her characters evoke the palette of the land. Her work often compares the achievements of the rural pioneers with those of encroaching industry. Her novel One of Ours (1922) won a Pulitzer in 1923.

"There was nothing but land: not a country at all, but the material out of which countries are made."

I am concerned about a web site that portrays Willa Cather as favoring lesbian relationships...any truth to it?

She was a feminist and a lesbian. So what? It makes her a great woman and a great writer.

I think people really need to think about the word acceptance and what it means in our society, or if it has lost its meaning entirely, as evidenced by some of these posts.

It would be much more useful to post a specific criticism. For example in your case, "I was hoping that your website would write my report for me but it doesn't do that and I feel cheated for having clicked on your link."

The people posting on this page need to grow up. If you can't find what you're looking for here just MOVE ON. Jeez. Willa Cather was an amazing author and an amazing human being, don't pollute a page dedicated to her with your garbage.
